I’m an American who’s never seen the Yorkshire moors yet, but fully intend to someday. I read “The Secret Garden” at least 20 times as a child, and loved it more every time. Was “Misselthwaite Manor” by any chance based on a real place? And if not, are there any old houses like it that the tourist can visit, preferably with beautiful walled gardens? Meanwhile, I’ll swat up my Yorkshire with your pronunciation guide!

Meh.
I’m from France and it’s the usual time for school here.
I did 5 years of 8h30-16h30 then 4 of variable hours that were at least 2 days a week 8h30-17h30, then 3 of 8h30-16h30/18h. What’s strange to that ?
Those exercises look a bit silly, but if the child doesn’t get the habit to work each day or at least 2-3 times a week, he’s fucked. And if he doesn’t know how to write/read at the end of the year it’s worse.
Why are you helping him aswell ? He doesn’t need you to tell him to do his homework. Let him experience to avoid doing his homework and being told it’s wrong.
And you don’t need to tell your son’s teachers what they have to do. If your son wants to tell them he can’t manage to do those exercises, he will.
In my class, when we had too much homework, we’d just say, “hey ma’am, that’s too much, we have this and that to do”, and if enough people agreed, she knew nobody would do it.
The only thing you should do with school is if he’s worried, if he has troubles with bullies for example, but you don’t need to help him with homework.

Dale: I didn’t realize Canadian politics ever got this interesting. Suddenly, the framework of a western democracy allows for a “coup d’état”. Who’d have thunk it?

There’s even a chance the economic stimulus package might fix the potholes on the 401. Surely not the signage as well? – How about: “Your lane ended a couple of exits back – brace yourself accordingly.”
